“There are a thousand differences and I’m not comparing it to anything… [but] Hitler rose to power democratically,” Yesh Atid MK Ben Barak said at a speaking event in the southern city of Beersheba.
Ben Barak warned against the potential ramifications for Israel’s judicial system if Netanyahu’s right-religious bloc — which includes the far-right Religious Zionism party — wins Tuesday’s election.

A disciple of Rabbi Meir Kahane, an outspoken anti-Palestinian extremist who was assassinated 31 years ago, Ben Gvir has been catapulted into parliament in part because he is the last man standing.
In the words of Stav Shaffir, a former legislator for the Israeli Labor party, he is the only remaining senior acolyte of Kahane whose “involvement in terror was not proven”. Other Kahane affiliates have been barred from running for election by the courts.
Kahane’s shadow still looms large over Israeli politics, even though his Kach movement was outlawed in 1994, four years after his death. Kach leaders have simply reinvented themselves, regularly turning up in new garb.

Although Benjamin Netanyahu’s return to power was expected, the strong result of the Religious Zionism party alliance of Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich was the real big news of Israel’s election—making them the third largest party in the Knesset. Their likely participation in the next government will have implications beyond domestic politics:
Israel’s far-right leaders not only rejected the idea of any territorial concession to the Palestinians, but also made West Bank annexation a cornerstone of their platform.
Netanyahu already promised to annex parts of the West Bank in 2020, before retracting it after signing the Abraham Accords with the UAE and Bahrain. Since then, Netanyahu has repeatedly played around with the idea to appeal to far-right voters.
The resurgence of such a plan could have dramatic consequences for Israel’s foreign policy....
