..With only weeks to go before he leaves his job—and after doing 

diddly-squat over his past five years as premier—Johnny-come-lately 

is now slamming Justin Trudeau for failing to honour his repeated prior 

commitments increase federal funding for health care.

“I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting for some significant response 

from the federal government and it, quite frankly, has been absent,” 

Horgan told Global.Hmm. He’s sick of waiting, too.

Only in his case, he’s doing that with other premiers in the 

Fairmont Empress Victoria.

Perhaps all the while nibbling on some tasty hors d’oeuvres and occasionally 

sipping some fine B.C. wines, courtesy of taxpayers and any private corporate hosts.

Year after year, it’s the same story.

I know. I participated in a dozen or so of those first ministers’ forums in 

another movie, as then-premier Gordon Campbell’s chief of staff.

Mostly, a pointless waste of everyone’s time, in my experience, that always 

resulted in yet another watered-down communique targeting increased federal 

health funding as one of its highest ambitions.

At that time, now decades ago, all premiers were pushing Ottawa to fund at 

least 25 percent of provincial health expenditures.

That’s half of the 50 percent the federal government originally pledged to 

fund in creating Canada’s current national health system.

Now, the premiers want the feds to fund 35 percent of every health dollar spent.

As if they’ve always begged for that share. Which is simply not true, however 

urgently needed that extra money is to save our health system from further disaster.

In the full interview aired on Global’s July 10 six o’clock news hour, 

Horgan said in uncharacteristically firm fashion that Trudeau is essentially a liar.

Like he only just figured that out.

Not that Horgan’s any stranger himself to making hollow promises

 he failed to keep, in health care especially...

Acts of erasure

..Instead, if anything, the ignorance is now more pronounced. 

Using "poverty" to refer to seniors and veterans over the poverty line, 

or using "poor" to refer to people who are only struggling to afford 

what they want, rather than being lower class 

(income 50 per cent below the median), and focusing all the 

attention on the hardships of those with financial privilege, 

are acts of erasure, silencing, and discrimination...

If you have never lived in poverty and yet know the first thing about 

institutionalized discrimination against those on welfare and disability,

 or know anything about the bitterness and the depression I am talking about, 

then you are an exception. And until voices like mine become centred, 

and the financial struggles of students, minimum-wage workers, 

and the middle class are moved to the periphery in order to let those truly 

dealing with oppression speak, that will never change.

But most of us have given up on trying to be heard, and did so long before 

this pandemic. A day comes when you simply have to turn away from a world

 telling you you don't deserve to be fed...

I suppose that makes me stubborn. Spurred by idealistic dreams, 

and the self-love that has never allowed me to take on the government's 

shame as my own, here I am, reaching out for the umpteenth time; still, after 

all these years, believing in love

BC disability assistance rates (PWD) are still thousands of dollars below the poverty line

 

BC PWD: Deep In Poverty

 

  • A year’s income at 2022 BC PWD rates for single persons is roughly $16,300. The poverty rate for Canada is approximately $26,000 for a single person.

  • The monthly Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), based on a minimum standard of living, was $2000, much more than the $1358 monthly provincial disability rate for a single person.

 

  • Despite these minuscule disability rates, disabled persons actually have higher living costs than non-disabled persons

 

  • As a result, persons on BC PWD disproportionately face

    • Poverty and ongoing debt

    • Homelessness and tenuous shelter

    • Starvation and malnutrition

    • Inability to pay for much needed medications

    • Depression and mental health issues

    •  

      • BC's Human Rights Commissioner stated that disabled persons are falling through the cracks in BC and aren't having their economic rights sufficiently protected

        • How Increasing BC PWD Helps

           

           

          By increasing BC PWD monthly payments to $1800, BC PWD rates would finally be brought up to Canada's poverty line, so that persons on BC disability assistance would better be able to meet basic needs instead of choosing between essentials like food, medication, rent, and utilities. For example, people on BC PWD would have a greater ability to:

        •  

        • Contribute to local businesses and economic rebuilding

        • Avoid homelessness and access safe shelter and housing

        • Prevent starvation and malnutrition

        • Afford life-saving medication and therapy

        • Buy suitable clothes for themselves and their children

        • Avoid being forced to choose between which bills to pay

        • Break out of poverty and debt cycles

        • Improve their mental health
