What a shock to read the recent article by Mark Hasiuk in the Province (November 20). He states,
“according to BC Housing internal documents the agency gave Sequel 138 developer Marc Williams a
$3.75 million loan (at 1.29 interest) for pre-construction costs and may provide around $20 to fund construction.”..
We condemn BC Housing’s outrageous decision in the strongest possible terms..
Should we expect more deals of this sort from BC Housing, whose 5 member board includes the
“condo king” Bob Rennie? Is there a conflict of interest in this arrangement between BC Housing and
Sequel 138? Will the increased property values resulting from this condo project benefit Rennie personally..

Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) neighbourhood has needed more safe,
stable and affordable supportive housing for decades. Recently, rising rents,
stagnant income assistance and intense property speculation have led to a
homelessness epidemic. This crisis is made worse by the neighbourhood’s
other intersecting crises, including unsafe drug supply and the poor condition
of housing. While the neighbourhood faces many complex challenges, it also
has advantages for low-income residents such as being close to health and social services.
The Downtown Eastside Community Land Trust demonstration project will
use a community land trust to help address those challenges. A land trust
could acquire property for permanent use as deeply affordable housing and
public space for DTES residents. First, however, the project will establish the
land trust’s framework, vision and goals. This includes establishing tenant-centered,
non-hierarchical governance and outlining a holistic housing model that is determined
by and for the DTES community....
3 Key Innovations

The project will use a decolonized governance model and is co-led by Indigenous peoples and people working first-hand with DTES residents.

Its services, which are aimed at supporting single room occupancy residents, are designed and implemented by people with lived experience.

The program’s tenant-led programming will empower residents, encourage community building and create a culture that is unique to each building.

Embattled B.C. ATIRA non-profit housing agency stands behind CEO;
housing minister shocked
B.C.’s housing minister said it’s “shocking” that Atira Women’s Resource Society is standing
behind its CEO despite evidence of systemic conflict of interest between the non-profit housing
agency and B.C. Housing’s former CEO.
Speaking to reporters in Victoria Tuesday, Kahlon said he was baffled that Atira CEO
Janice Abbott claimed to have not read the Ernst and Young report released Monday.
The investigation found Atira, B.C.’s largest non-profit housing provider, received
preferential treatment for housing contracts because Abbott is married to B.C. Housing’s
former CEO Shayne Ramsay. Ramsay resigned in August after 22 years as B.C. Housing’s top boss.
“The CEO says she hasn’t even read it. It shows a level of lack of concern for the information
that’s been provided,” Kahlon said. “Certainly, my hope was that it wouldn’t be business as usual.”
